Field Notes: What Breaks First When a Platform Scales 10x
After rebuilding several platforms for hypergrowth, the failure points are surprisingly predictable. Here is the order things tend to break in.
It is rarely the database that falls over first, despite what most founders worry about. In our experience across platform rebuilds, the failure order is remarkably consistent.
The usual order of failure
Support and operations buckle first, because they are still staffed for last year's volume. Manual reconciliation is next, spreadsheet-based reconciliation simply cannot keep pace once volume compounds. Only after those two does raw infrastructure become the bottleneck.
- Support and operations break before infrastructure does
- Manual reconciliation is a silent, compounding risk
- Database and infra issues are usually the most visible but least urgent
